UON HOLDS VIRTUAL GRADUATION CEREMONY

The University of Nairobi  conducted a virtual graduation a first one since it's inception.The University, in the recent past successfully shifted all its research,teaching and learning to online platforms due to the challenges posed by Covid -19  pandemic. On September 25th , 2020 the University delivered the 63rd Graduation through virtual platform. The ceremony was held at  the Great Court. The chief guest Cabinet secretary for education Prof George Magoha graced the occasion. 

Preparations for online and distance learning to counter COVID 19 pardemic challenges

The department of eduactional communication and technology is currently finishing prepairing modules to be used for online and distance learning. The modules once prepaired, lecturers will be able to use them for online teaching and also using them for distance learning to counter the challeges posed by the COVID 19 perdemic. this is meant to  ensure that learning countinues uninterrupted and the students are able to proceed with their studies despite the challeges being faced nationally and internationally.

ONLINE EXAMINATION ADMINISTRATION TO MITIGATE COVID 19 CHALLENGES

Members of the department of educational communication and technology went through various platforms of administering online examinations. The training was held from 14th to 19th of May 2020 setting the way for the department to complete the semester that was interrupted by the corona epidemic. The training was meant to ensure that the lecturers were able to set and administer the examinations effectively while maintaining it's integrity. This sets the way for the end of semester examinations being held online after the senate approved online examinations. 

COMMENCEMENT OF ONLINE TEACHING AND LEARNING

The Department of Educational Communication and Technology has started online teaching and learning. This is after members of staff and students (both undergraduate and post graduate) were trained on how to access various online resources. The time tables for the all the programmes have been prepaired and disseminated to the staff members and students. Soma na Telkom sim cards have also been distributed by the university to members of staff and students who have registered for the semester to allow for online teaching and also accessing the various online resources.

ONLINE TEACHING AND LEARNING

The University of Nairobi suspended Face–to-face learning on March 16th 2020 following a presidential directive to close all learning institutions to contain the spread of Corona Virus.In light of this the Senate resolved that all teaching & learning be migrated to online platforms. The following platforms have been approved for use in teaching and learning:

 - Zoom

 - Google Classroom

- Big Blue Button

–Blackboard

 - Webex

- University e-learning platform (e-class)

UON - Concordia University Collaboration

The Principal College of Education and External Studies CEES hosted visitors from Corncordia University, Canada. The discussions were centered on areas of collaboration between the Concordia  University and the Department of Educational Communication and Technology especially in digital literacy as the country embarks on the implementation of the Competency based curriculum (CBC). The department has it's third year  Bachelor of Education Early Childhood Development students already going through the learning tool kit programme.

VISIT BY THARAKA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

Tharaka university college sent three of it staff from the department of educational communication and technology  to the department on a benchmarking  mission. The university is in the process of establishing an E-learning resource center prompting the visit. They were taken through the facilities and other resources in the department used in the process of teacher training.

The department of educational communication and technology conducted its third training on the learning tool kit software for its 3rd year, Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development student from 28th  to 31st October 2019.  A total of 70 students were trained in two groups, each for two days by two facilitators –Mr. Enos Kiforo and Ms. Rose Imiza in the College of Education and External Studies computer laboratories
